The future is uncertain for a cafe at the heart of the community, after London-based landlords confirmed they would not renew its lease. Barista’s cafe, situated in the centre of the Aberafan Shopping Centre, was due to renew a 10-year lease at the beginning of March, but mid-February received notice from the landlords, Edinburgh House Estates. Costa Coffee is rumoured to be a potential new tenant for the unit, but a spokeswoman for Edinburgh House Estates confirmed only that a “High Street brand” has been lined up to take over. The move sparked local protests, with 2,000 people signing a petition to keep the cafe open, and more than 50 attending a protest at the shopping centre last week. The Met Office is forecasting sunshine for the cultural festival of food and entertainment set to take over Station Road, Forge Road and Aberafan Shopping Centre tomorrow. The Senses of the Dragon Festival will be NSA Afan’s second Big Lottery funded event and will include family friendly entertainment, food stalls, local craft and vintage stalls and a fun fair. Local shops are also getting in on the action, and any shops displaying the Port Talbot Pound logo in their windows will be running special offers for the day. Storm Imogen batters Port Talbot with 83mph winds

Port Talbot is recovering today after Storm Imogen brought chaos and disruption to the town. Around 300 Port Talbot homes were left without electricity yesterday as winds recorded at 83mph battered the coastline. Rail, roads and the coastline were all affected by the barrage of extreme conditions as local organisations warned people to take care. The speed limit on Baglan Bridge was lowered to 30mph and the M4 was closed for a period between Cardiff and Swansea due to a road accident at Margam, when a lorry was blown over.
