Kidwelly 22 Aberavon Quins 31
IN a remarkable comeback the Quins secured an exciting bonus point away victory in this Division Two West clash.
The game started with the Quins’ pack dominating proceedings. Some good bursts from hooker James Davies and flanker Craig Cox looked to produce a score, but Kidwelly struck first when a huge kick from fly half Leighton Walters gained a foothold in Quins territory, and a surprise nudge in a scrum, with slick handling, gave winger Matthew Davies a spectacular try.
A first start of the season for Steve Colarusso saw him given limited attacking opportunities, but with centres Gareth Pugh and Kyle Blackmore he put in some sterling defending.
Some poor kicking from the Quins invited Kidwelly to counter- attack, and Aaron Warren caught the visitors’defenders flat-footed to score a try converted by Walters.
Over-elaboration in some lines-out caused the Quins unnecessary problems in a phase of the game which they controlled, and when they lost their own throw five metres out winger Chris Moore finished a swift handling move with a corner try.
Some hard running from home back row men Will Russell and Elgan Morgan kept the Quins at full stretch in the tropical conditions.
Starting the second half 0-17 down, the Quins’ position was made worse when another ill-directed kick allowed a spectacular counter-attacking move with Matthew Davies grabbing his second try.
The introduction of Richard Diaz into the fray at tight head saw the heavyweight Quins eight get a grip of the situation, and the tighter approach took a visible toll on the lighter home pack. Winger Adam Dawe crossed after a trademark bruising run.
The Quins’ forwards, with huge contributions from No 8 Dan Webb, Craig Cox and Chris Jones, turned the screw and tight forwards Lloyd Hayden, Diaz and the spectacular Liam Puckett smashed their way through the home defenders.
Matt Potsuma took a penalty quickly and crossed for a try that he converted. More forward pressure resulted in a penalty try for the Quins which Potsuma converted.
The Quins’ kicking improved and the inevitable forward pressure produced a try for impressive Webb. Adam Dawe scored his second try and Potsuma had the last say with a touchline conversion to give the Quins a bonus point win.
